Resin 3D printers are amazing tools. They’re great for detailed projects like miniatures and prototyping. Like all all great tools and equipment, they need regular maintenance to keep performing at their best. One common maintenance task is replacing the FEP film. The FEP, or Fluorinated Ethylene Propylene sheet, is the transparent film on the bottom of your resin vat. I recently had to replace mine on my, so I’m sharing an easy step-by-step guide to replacing the film on your Anycubic Photon M3. Although this replacement kit I’ll be using is no longer available for this printer, this method can be applied to similar Anycubic models like the Photon Mono 2, Mono 4, 4 Ultra, 4K, and D2.

Why Replace the FEP Film?

The FEP film is crucial. It lets UV light from your printer’s LCD screen cure each resin layer. Over time, with every print, the film becomes cloudy, scratched, or can even puncture, leading to print failures and even possible damage to your printer’s LCD screen. Signs that it’s time to change your FEP include:

  • Cloudy or scratched film
  • Resin no longer sticking well to the build plate
  • Visible tears or leaks onto the LCD screen

What You’ll Need

  • Replacement FEP Film Kit
  • Allen wrench (usually included with your printer)
  • Gloves (to protect your hands from any resin residue)
  • Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) for cleaning
  • Microfiber or other scratch-resistant cloth

Step 1: Remove the Old FEP Film

Put on your gloves and unscrew the resin vat from the printer. Use the Allen wrench to unscrew the 18 bolts securing the film to the vat. While removing these bolts, take note of the tension so you can replicate it later.

Once all screws are removed, gently push from the back to pop out the old frame. Inspect the old film for damage—you’ll probably notice numerous scratches or dents, reinforcing why timely replacements are important!

Step 2: Clean the Vat

Before installing the new film, thoroughly clean the vat’s rim with IPA. Removing old resin and debris ensures a tight and leak-free fit.

Note: Be mindful of static electricity when handling the new film—it can instantly attract dust that might cling to your new film surface.

Step 3: Install the New FEP Film

Position the new FEP film frame into your resin vat—there’s only one way to fit it correctly due to the divots for the screws. Replace the screws in a star pattern, starting in one corner and then moving to the opposite corner. This method evenly distributes tension and prevents leaks.

Step 4: Final Cleaning and Maintenance

Once secured, wipe down your resin vat and LCD screen using a microfiber cloth to remove any lint that may have been attracted. Keeping these components clean enhances the longevity of your printer and FEP film.

Additional Tips:

  • Avoid keeping resin in the vat for more than 24 hours, as it can degrade the FEP film faster.
  • Regularly inspect your FEP film after each print for early signs of wear or damage.

This quick maintenance task can be completed in about five minutes, helping you avoid bigger issues down the road. Regular FEP film replacements ensure your Anycubic Photon 3D resin printer continues producing high-quality prints without unexpected issues.
